Plexi Glass Applications for Windows

Many people choose to use plexiglass for windows. Plexi glass is lightweight, transparent, and can withstand hot and cold temperatures. Plexiglass is also known as Polycarbonate and more common as lexan. Many people will use the term plexiglass acrylic and polycarbonate or lexan as meaning the same, when they are two different materials. Lexan is the happy medium between acrylic and glass applications. It is stronger than those two materials, and can be used in applications where glass or acrylic will not suffice. Some people consider plexiglass to replace a broken glass window. Contractors building a new home consider this material as well for many reasons.

Plexi Glass Vs. Regular Glass – Benefits and advantages

One advantage to plexiglass is that it is easier to work with that heavy glass. Another benefit is that it is sturdy and can withstand a blow or extreme weather better than glass. A kid playing with a ball is a good example of this. Plexiglass is more pliable, and gives more bounce than glass does. However, when working with this material, it is important to be careful as it can also break and crack.

Plexiglass window insert packages are sold in hardware stores or home improvement centers. This is very convenient for the do it yourselfer and an easy way to replace a damaged glass window.

It is important to clean plexiglass the old fashioned way, with a clean rag or cloth and water. Because it is plastic, ammonia and harsh soaps or chemicals cannot be used on it, as it will damage the material, corrode it, fog it permanently, opaque it, or scratch it.

Another down to plexiglass is that with time, areas that are hit with much sunlight will tend to change color – yellowish – and they get brittle and may crack. Plexiglass is also an expensive material.

Plexiglass sheets come in many solid colors other than clear – red, blue, green, yellow, orange, and brown. It also comes in transparent color sheets. Fluorescent color transparent sheets are also available, so are solid white and black sheets. Plexiglass is also made in non-glare sheets or frosted sheets. Non-glare sheets reduce and minimize reflection and glare, and frosted sheets offer a bit more privacy while letting light in. Plexiglass acrylic mirror sheets are available as a better choice for interior decoration uses, and safer, easier to use.

Whatever type of plexiglass you decide to use in your window will depend on the purpose – décor, privacy, special effects, aesthetics, durability – also, it is important to consider the amount of sun the window will receive, especially if using colored plexiglass.

These are just a few pros and cons of using plexiglass material for windows.

One of the most important issues when remodeling a home in a strict budget is the issue of planning. Simply put, without planning carefully, your budget will break, and you will end up with tons of debt. Having a plan of the different areas that will be tackled in the home remodeling project will help keep track of expenses and keep you under budget. Whether it is a small remodeling project or a large one does not matter, you still need to plan your work and materials.

One issue to include in your planning is to keep track of seasonal sales to save more money on materials. Inventory clearance sales at home improvement centers offer great savings. Old models or last inventory models that are brand new items will save you hundreds of dollars.

If you are handy, do as much of the renovation yourself, as much as you can handle. Hire help only on the areas that you are not handy. Areas that will require licensing or an expert should be left to the professionals. It is recommended to do more than two estimates and compare pricing.

Many times, items can be brought back to life by refinishing and repainting; consider that before discarding a piece of furniture and spending money on a new one. Think outside the box and use items in a different way – an old cabinet can be refinished and used as a sink base or as an island in the kitchen.

Consider buying paint that has a built-in primer on it – it will save you time and money. Protect the areas that do not require remodeling by covering them with used or cheap throws, sheets that you have or can get at flea markets.

Try to save money for the smaller remodeling projects, if you must use a home equity loan or a line of credit for a large remodel, shop and compare different lenders. Keep within budget and do not be tempted to spend more just because you have the money for it.

Try to work with your existing floor plan and plumbing system layout. It is more expensive to add to the sides or change the plumbing to accommodate an addition than to build up. The same thing goes with the electrical system; moving it will cost you more.

Another issue is to live in your home while you are doing the remodeling. Although this may be unnerving in many cases, it will save you tons of money on hotel costs, especially if the remodel extends the time frame. Unless, you have a family member that will let you stay free, living at home during the remodeling is best, as long as there are no safety issues.

Planning, budgeting, and comparing prices are three key elements for a successful remodel.

How to Use Dressers to Update Home Décor

A dresser happens to be a very integral part of a child’s bedroom. Although it can be featured in any bedroom, it is typically featured in children’s bedrooms. This is because it not only adds organization and storage to the room, but it also brings beauty to the overall décor of the room. It is very easy to make a dresser coordinate with a theme given to the room. And instead of relying on the regular basic looks that can be affiliated with most dressers purchased from the store, try to decorate and personalize the dresser to best suit the personality of your child and their overall room décor.

A very interesting way to personalize a dresser is by transforming it into a dresser with a writable twist. Children will go crazy for a surface to write, scribble, or doodle on. In order to achieve this look, the dresser can be painted with one to two coats of chalkboard wall paint. With this simple step, a writable dresser is right in front of your very eyes. The dresser can be a great reminder to children of who they used to be, acting as a memoir of sorts as well as a way to remind them of their daily lives right now.

Another way to make dresser interesting is to make it magnetic. This can be done by using magnetic paint. It is an effective and easy way to make a dresser into a bulletin board that is truly unique. This means the child’s dresser can be decorated with photos, cute magnets, artwork, and other memorabilia that catches the child’s eye. In addition to this, a coat of a color that is “kiddie” can be used to spruce up the dresser’s overall color. Either a “kiddie” color, like bright reds, pale blues, candy pinks, cherry yellows, or grassy greens, can be used or the favorite color of your child. To make the dresser stand out even more, add stencils to create stripes or even paint polka dots, clouds, or hearts.

If decorating the dresser by using paint is not exactly your niche, choose to decorate your child’s dresser by brightening it with accessories. Add a touch of whimsy by tying to the knobs of the dresser broad, colorful ribbons and by sticking decals to the dresser. Also, add hooks onto the dresser’s side as a space for your child to hang a favorite toy and/or a keepsake that reminds you of your child. For girls, think about hot gluing hair bows to the dresser and for boys, think about hot gluing miniature cars or action figures.
